Designing the Perfect Oasis: Unveiling the Summit Hill Bath Project

We recently took this original 1980s bathroom and gave it an extreme makeover. This particular project is near and dear to our hearts, because it just so happens to be Josh's mom's bathroom.

Those of you who are from Chanute have probably heard or have been out to visit Summit Hill Gardens. If you haven't, it's well known for it's artistic and historic charm. Patsy (that's Josh's mom's name) and her late husband (Larry Wooster) moved the house to the property and connected it to an original 1800s stone school house. So, when we embarked on this venture we wanted the bathroom to feel the same way; artistic and historical.

What She Wanted

After 40 years of living in the space and using the bathroom, Patsy pretty much knew what she wanted.

She wanted a tub only, no shower, more window light, and less storage pieces. It's a fairly small bathroom, so the less amount of storage pieces, the better.

The first thing she picked out for the bathroom was the green marble mosaic tile. We knew we wanted it to feel old and historical, so the first tile that came to mind was zellige tile. It's perfectly imperfect and no two pieces are alike. They have curves and chips making it feel like it's aged. So I ordered a few samples and she chose her favorite one.

As for the window lighting, she had one window in the bathroom originally but it was double hung and small. We opted for a longer casement window and added one in the bath area so she could look out the window and relax.

The Arch

Our original idea was to put one of her giant stained glass windows on the back wall and have that be the focal point for the whole room. However, due to the roof lines we weren't able to do that. We were throwing around a few ideas for the back wall and different tile ideas until inspiration struck. What about an arch? The ceilings are tall and partly vaulted, so there would be plenty of room to have one. To be sure, I drew it up to make certain it would look right and of course it did, so we moved forward.

The Stained Glass Door

Originally, the bathroom had a bifold door and she was fine with that so we were going to keep it. However, she remembered she had this stained glass piece stored away that she wanted to incorporate.

Not only did this piece of stained glass go perfectly with the colors that we chose for the bathroom, but it also provides that historical feel to this brand new remodel. This particular piece of glass also used to be at her late mother's house. So it's very sweet that it has found a permanent home that she gets to enjoy everyday.

The Vanity

Patsy had a dresser that she really wanted to use for the vanity. I was excited about it because I had always wanted to turn one into a vanity, but Josh and the rest of the crew weren't quite as excited. There wasn't a ton of room to work with, so I was also glad that the vanity wasn't very deep so it didn't take up too much space.

The mirror that she wanted to use came from a whole different dresser, but they paired up well together and were also the same size. However, I knew we were going to have to use a wall mounted faucet because the dresser wasn't very deep. That meant we needed the back to be water proof since the faucet was coming out of it.

We mimicked the original curves of the mirror and sat the wood part right onto the new quartz and it couldn't have turned out better. Now we don't have to worry about water and the piece is as stately as ever.

It was fun getting to work together on this project and getting to be artistic and creative. Ultimately we wanted this place to be exactly what she wanted. We think Patsy likes it because we frequently get pictures of her toes in the tub ;) and we hope you like it as much as we do.
