Creating Your Dream Home: A Guide to Choosing Materials and Anticipating 2024 Home Design Trends

Are you getting fatigued by how fast people say something you just purchased for your home is out? It’s like you start renovating thinking you want one thing, but by the end of it you feel like everything you’ve chosen is “out” since trends have changed yet again.

Today I was going to talk about the 2024 trend forecasts, but halfway through it I was getting overwhelmed just listing all the new stuff that is considered “in”. It can be exhausting (and expensive) trying to stay up to date with all the “trends” that come out every year. So I’ve decided to try something different.

I’m going to walk you through how I make home design decisions while also mentioning a few 2024 trends that may just fit into your style already, and if they don’t, don’t worry about it! Make decisions based on what you love to look at and feel everyday.

Color:

Choosing a color palette for your home can be overwhelming because the choices are endless. One thing I like to do to get started is find the parts of your home that can’t be changed. For example, if changing all your flooring in your home isn’t in the budget then take the colors within your floor into consideration first as your jumping off point.

Next, find out the tone of the pieces that have to stay. Do they have a warmer or cooler tone? Then start thinking of colors you like, or would like to see in your home. Pick 3-5 colors and have one be a shade of white and one be a darker, contrasting color. Then you will take these colors and use the 60-30-10 rule.

The 60-30-10 rule is where you make 60% of your room one color, 30% should be a secondary color or texture, and 10% is your accent color. For examples of the 60-30-10 rule click here.

Trending Colors

Red

A color that has been popping up in the fashion realm and trickling into interiors is red. I thought it was one particular shade of red, but it seems the more I look, the more I found that to be untrue. So if red is a color that resonates with you, add it to your home via accent wall, cabinetry, or furniture/decor pieces.

Yellow

Another color I’ve been seeing, mostly on cabinetry, is yellow. I recently painted my own kitchen cabinets Sherwin Williams Restrained Gold and I didn’t realize the impact a happy color can make.

Green

Green is another color that has been around awhile and definitely isn’t going anywhere in 2024. There are so many different ways to add green, but here are a few examples.

Paint Sheens:

Typically we choose flat paint for the ceiling and satin for the walls because satin is easier to wipe off and keep clean, but these days you can see high-gloss on the ceiling and flat on the walls. When choosing a paint sheen I would think about what you want that wall or piece to do. If you want it to blend in and feel natural, I would go with flat or satin. If you want it to reflect, stand out, or have a slight texture then go with a semi or high gloss.

Trending Sheens

High gloss and lacquer seems to be popping up everywhere. The hard thing about this super gloss sheen is it is a bit harder to achieve a really nice look. With flat and satin, imperfections blend in, but with a glossier sheen every imperfection is brought to light. So, I highly recommend hiring a professional if you’d like to use high gloss somewhere in your home.

Metals:

Like paint, metals have an undertone that can be warm or cool. Based on the color palette you’ve chosen, lean toward the undertone of the metal in that same direction. If you’d like to mix metals, again look at the undertones and pair like tones. I typically like to choose one shiny metal and one matte metal.

Trending Metals:

I’ve been seeing more and more polished nickel which is a warm version of chrome. It gives a more traditional feel and offers some shine for an elevated look. I’ve also started seeing more and more designers using chrome for a cooler tone and more modern vibe.

For the brass lovers, such as myself, don’t worry. Brass isn’t going anywhere. I feel silly even saying that because honestly, I think any metal goes as long as it feels cohesive with the other colors and surfaces in your home.

But, if you’re looking to update your faucets or hardware and aren’t sure what to go with, I do think polished nickel is the safest choice due to its warmth and subtle color.

Patterns:

Wallpaper and patterned fabrics are a way to bring character into a home and showcase more of your personality. If you’d like to use a pattern in a room, an easy way to add wallpaper into your palette is to choose a wallpaper or a fabric that has your colors in it already. This will make it feel cohesive with everything else you have in your home.

There isn’t a trending pattern per se, but rather stacking patterns is something we are going to see more of in 2024. This can make some feel a bit stressed out, but if you’re a maximalist and want to try it out, this is your time to shine!

Flooring:

Picking out new flooring can be stressful, because typically it's a HUGE investment. My biggest tip, buy samples. We bought new flooring last year and the first batch we bought on a whim because I thought it would be fine and I didn’t need the sample. I was SO wrong. The beautiful honey colored hardwood was actually so gray in my house. So, I strongly recommend buying 3-5 samples and narrowing it down based on other decisions you’ve already, or compare it to things that are staying in your home, and be sure to look at the lighting in your house.

Trending Flooring:

I don’t think really dark woods are going to come back (for flooring) only because everyone seems to have pets these days and it shows hair. So. bad. BUT I do think we will see less of the really light, white oak. It’s still a beautiful flooring so if that is what you just put down in your entire home don’t feel like you need to rip it out. I just think we are leaning into more of a warmer, cozier feel after the long ridden cool gray everything era.

As for tile floors, or really tile in general, I think we are going to see more intricate detail and statement pieces. With new homes going up all the time, I think people miss the details of the older homes. That’s why we are seeing checkered flooring, tile inlays, and more statement tile.

Overall when it comes to picking items out for your home, I would look at these 3 things:

  1. The type of home you have or hope to have.

  • If you live in an older, craftsman style house you can pull off those wood details and richer colors and have it blend flawlessly.

  1. Items that have to stay the way they are.

  • This one is huge to me and is probably the first thing I take into consideration. Home renovations are a huge investment and there is nothing wrong with keeping some of the original parts of your home to accommodate budget. There are so many ways to make them fit into what you’re going for when it comes to your home.

  1. Inspired by images you love.

  • I’m a huge Pinterest girl. I make boards for our client’s spaces, for my own home, and for future projects I hope to do. I recommend saving pictures that make you feel something and really study the image to figure out what it is about that picture that you love. Then use that to find the next picture, color, or piece for your home until every room comes together.

Out of all the trends we talked about today, which one are you thinking about trying in 2024? I'm embracing the yellow cabinets and we are currently putting some polished nickel in a bathroom remodel that I can't wait to share with you! Let us know which trend you're thinking about trying in the comments below.
